Tony Terbrueggen

As I moved up in my career to leadership roles, I often had to build and rebuild IT organizations and had to reestablish the credibility of the IT groups that I inherited. They often had lost the trust of the stakeholders not because they weren’t capable, but rather because their fear of doing something wrong had caused them to do nothing at all. I encouraged my team to be willing to try, to sometimes fail, but to always learn and move on. That is how I build teams that know that it is safe to stretch themselves, and ones that readily bring new thinking to complex problems and challenges. And that is how I have built the next generation of leaders.

When I began my IT career in a systems engineering role, those early lessons in sales paid off. I noticed that my peers were often paralyzed by their fear of making a mistake, while I easily delivered solutions on-time and in innovative ways because I wasn’t afraid to try something new—to look beyond the obvious. And if an approach didn’t work, I quickly learned from that attempt and moved on—to me, it was just a “teaching moment.”
